Client Spotlight: The Inspiration of Sherry’s Run

In the heart of Tennessee, the inspiration of Sherry’s Run has impacted thousands since its 2004 start. This annual event known as Sherry’s Run brings together individuals from all walks of life. The run’s purpose is to spread cancer awareness and provide support and assistance for those battling the disease. This inspiring event illuminates the resilience and sense of community found in this Middle Tennessee region. Sherry’s Run honors the memory of its namesake, Sherry Whitaker. And serves as a symbol of support for cancer patients and their families.

The first run took place on a Saturday in September 2004. On that day, no one would have ever imagined one 5k event, would grow into a Christ-centered, grassroots organization. The infamous, Sherry’s Run, has evolved into a non-profit called Sherry’s Hope.

The Origin of Sherry’s Run

What started as love for one woman has become an explosion of grace for this community. Sherry’s Run was established in memory of Sherry Whitaker. A beloved wife, mother, and friend who lost her battle with colon cancer in 2004. Her courageous fight and the impact she had on those around her inspired the community to come together and take action against cancer. Furthermore, in 2004, the first Sherry’s Run 5K Run/Walk was organized, and since then, it has grown into a highly anticipated annual event.

Community Engagement

Sherry’s Run receives overwhelming support from the local community. Residents, businesses, and organizations rally together to make each year’s event successful. The spirit of volunteerism is inspiring, as individuals contribute their time, resources, and expertise to ensure the event’s smooth execution. Gratefully, fundraisers are organized leading up to the event, and many volunteer the day itself. Overall, the community plays a pivotal role in the success of Sherry’s Run.

Fundraising and Assistance:

This not only represents a fundraising event but also actively supports cancer patients in tangible ways. The event channels its proceeds directly into the organization, providing financial assistance to individuals and families affected by cancer. The first 5K’s funds specifically supported cancer research, focusing on finding a cure for colon cancer. Since then, Sherry’s Hope (Sherry’s Run) has actively helped thousands of families in their fight against cancer.

In January 2021, Sherry’s Run began operating under Sherry’s Hope. The change is simply a way to share better the mission of offering the hope of Christ to families who are hurting because of cancer. Therefore, the 5K will still be referred to by its original name, Sherry’s Run continuing as it has since 2004.
